종묘는 조선왕조 태조 이성계가 조선 건국 후 1395년에 가장 먼저 정전을 창건해 조성한 왕실 사당으로 이성계의 4대 선조(목조, 익조, 도조, 환조)의 신주를 처음으로 모셨다. 정전은 역대 왕과 왕비의 신주를 모신 종묘의 가장 중심이 되는 건물로 19칸 길이 101m 길이로 단일목조건물로는 세계최고로 긴 건물이다. 신주를 따로 모시는 곳으로 1921년에 영녕전을 세워다. 건축 양식이 단순하면서도 장엄한특징을 가지고 있어 건축미가 뛰어나다, 2025년 7월 5년간의 보수 공사를 마쳤다.

Jongmyo is the royal shrine of the Joseon dynasty, first established in 1395 after King Taejo Yi Seong-gye founded the dynasty. The main hall (Jeongjeon) was constructed first, enshrining the spirit tablets of Taejo’s four generations of ancestors—Mokjo, Ikjo, Dojo, and Hwanjo. Jeongjeon, the central building of Jongmyo where the spirit tablets of successive kings and queens are kept, is 19 bays wide and 101 meters long, making it the longest single-story wooden structure in the world.

Yeongnyeongjeon, a separate hall for additional spirit tablets, was built in 1921. The architecture of Jongmyo is simple yet solemn, giving it exceptional aesthetic beauty. A five-year restoration project was completed on July 5, 2025.
