태조 이성계는 1392년 7월 17일 조선 개국후 새 도읍을 한양으로 정한후 한양도성 축성을 시작 1394년 천도하였고 1395년에 기본적 한양 성곽이 완성되었다. 한양도성은 북악–낙산–남산–인왕산의 능선을 따라 18.6km 길이로 쌓았고 약 16km²를 감싸고 있다, 인왕산은 서쪽 방어의 핵심 지점이었다. 후일 태종으로 등극한 이방원이 1398년 1차 왕자의 난을 일으켜 개국공신 정도전을 주살한 곳이 인왕산 무악재 근처였다. 인왕산은 역사적 중요사건의 배경지 이기도 하지만 호랑이·도깨비·선녀 등 다양한 전설이 전해지는 민속적 이미지가 풍부한 산이다. 세계에 한양도성 만큼 훌륭하게 보존되어 있고 사람들 삶과 역사가 이어오는 성곽은 없다. 서울의 가장 아름다운 모습과 이야기를 듣고 싶다면 인왕산 성곽을 오르면된다.

After founding the Joseon dynasty on July 17, 1392, King Taejo Yi Seong-gye selected Hanyang as the new capital and began the construction of the Hanyang City Wall. The capital was officially moved there in 1394, and the basic structure of the fortress was completed in 1395. The Hanyangdoseong followed the ridgelines of Bugak, Naksan, Namsan, and Inwangsan, stretching 18.6 kilometers and enclosing an area of about 16 square kilometers. Inwangsan was a key defensive point on the western side. Near Muakjae on Inwangsan, Yi Bang-won—who would later ascend the throne as King Taejong—killed the founding contributor Jeong Do-jeon during the First Strife of the Princes in 1398.

Inwangsan is not only the setting of important historical events but also a mountain rich in folklore, with legends of tigers, goblins, and heavenly maidens. Nowhere else in the world is there a city wall as well preserved as the Hanyangdoseong, where the lives and history of its people continue to flow.
